BPW Wins Honors
The New York State Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) held its New York State Conference May 31 through June 1 in Staten Island, New York The Owego BPW locally held several notable events this past year. NY State BPW awarded the club a first place for the NY State BPW President's Domestic Violence Awareness project. The club promoted awareness of domestic violence in many ways this past year. The first project was a monthly collection of items A New Hope Center on Church Street in Owego needed. With the help of several other groups in the area, pillows, blankets, sheets, towels, food items and paper goods were collected. A very informative article was written by Rose Garrity, the Executive Director of A New Hope Center, and published June 20 in the Binghamton Press, which received a lot of attention. Along with the honor of winning the Presidents Award, the club was presented with a check for $100, which was presented to A New Hope Center on June 5. The club received a first place recognizing its Women's History Month Program held at the Tioga County Museum for the joint program with the museum, which brought Belva Lockwood to life and allowed the audience to participate in questioning Lockwood about her life. Another first place recognized the club's efforts during National Business Women's Week held last November. A second place award was presented for their Roster of membership, a third place for its newsletters, and an honorable mention for publicity.
