Apalachin Firemen's Field Days Celebrates 50
Years!
This year marks a very special event for
the Apalachin Fire Department, as we celebrate 50 Years of Field Days.
What started as a small fund raising event with games and hot dogs so long
ago has evolved into the fun-filled spectacular all area kids, and most
adults, look forward to all year.
For the kids, the rides, games, and a chance
to win a bike are tops, with cotton candy and ice cream not far behind.
The grown-ups get hungry just imagining
the smell of that chicken barbeque wafting across the midway, the tang
of sausages smothered with Jean Birds secret recipe fried peppers, and
the crisp crunch of hot fries. Perhaps the spring night is a bit nippy,
and a steaming bowl of the Lion's Club clam chowder would hit the spot.
Don't forget freshly steamed clams dripping with melted butter, scrumptious
kielbasa or meatball subs washed down with a chilled beer, with a slice
of freshly-baked pie for dessert. Big Six and Paint Ball, Lady Bug Spiedies,
Break-A-Plate and more- it's all here waiting; all that's left to add is
YOU.
These last 50 years of Field Days have
made it possible for the department, as well as many other community organizations
to raise funds. We couldn't have done it without the cooperation and help
of many dedicated volunteers, and the overwhelming response of the community.

a Crew Chief with the Emergency Squad, after completing a period of preceptoring.

after three months of intensive training.

Training
Close to 30 members attended training delivered
through FASNY on CSI. On the famous forensics TV show, they investigate
murders; this class dealt with Crash Scene Investigation.
Many of our EMS providers attended a Trauma
Teaching Day on April 12. This day-long event gets the most up-to-date
information into the hands of our providers and enables them to sharpen
their skills and share in the flow of knowledge about Emergency Medicine.
Also in April, department members participated
in Emergency Vehicle Operator's Training. If you happened to travel Pennsylvania
Avenue on April 26 and wondered why fire trucks were slaloming around traffic
cones at AES, this was a great training on driving our apparatus in a safe
and efficient manner. After all, we can't help you with your emergency
if we can't get there safely.
Check Your Smoke Detectors, Please!
New information released by the Office
of Fire Prevention and Control Administrator Floyd Madison emphasizes yet
again the importance of working detectors.
• Place smoke alarms on every level of
your home, outside each sleeping area and in every bedroom.
• Test smoke alarms monthly.
• Vacuum alarms monthly to remove dust
and cobwebs.
• Replace old alarms. Smoke alarms 10 years
old or older need to be replaced.
• Alarms should never be disconnected and
batteries should never be removed for other uses.
If you have any questions on alarms, please
stop by our station for a free brochure.
