Annual JKB Softball Tournament
The JKB Foundation will hold the 1st-Annual
"Just Keep Believing" Charity Softball Tournament on the grounds of Owego
Free Academy June 13-14, 2008.
The tournament will raise funds for 17
year-old OFA student Jessica Kress Burrell. Jessica sustained a traumatic
spinal cord injury (SCI) and numerous other injuries in a car accident
less than a mile from her home on her way to school February 6, 2008.
Since the accident, Jessica has been receiving
treatment and therapy at the world-renowned Shepherd Center in Atlanta,
GA. But, her injuries will require several years of rehabilitation.
Jessica is a member of the varsity volleyball
and softball teams at OFA and is heavily involved in several school activities
and clubs.
The two-day tournament will feature slow-pitch
softball play on eight different fields. There will be a 16-team division
for high school-aged players and a 32-team division for adults. The cost
to sign-up is $100 per high school team and $250 for each adult team. The
high school teams will start play on Friday, June 13 while the adult teams
will play only on Saturday, June 14.
All participating players will receive
a free JKB Softball Tourney T-Shirt. Cash prizes will be awarded to the
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place adult teams, while special champions t-shirts will
be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place high school teams.
The tournament will also offer a "Home
Run Derby" - with prizes and chances to win a new car - along with a full
concession stand, 50/50 raffles and door prizes.
Raffle tickets are currently on-sale for
$10 each, with dozens of prizes to be awarded during the tournament, including
four tickets to a New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium,
which includes a limo ride to and from the game. Raffle tickets are being
sold at all Owego-Apalachin School District buildings.
"We're excited about (the tournament),"
tournament organizer Steve Virkler said on News Radio 1330, WEBO. "Our
goal is to raise around $50,000 for Jessica's family. Hopefully, we're
well on our way."
Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
