Apalachin Firemen's Field Days June 4, 5, 6
& 7 - 50 Years!
Preparations are already underway
to bring the community the best Field Days ever. This year we will be celebrating
50 years of Field Days with the community! Can't you almost smell that
barbecued chicken, fresh popcorn, and sizzling sausage? Are you ready for
mouth-watering steamed clams, juicy spiedies, crispy French-fires and pizza-frittes?
We are tidying the facilities, sprucing up booths and games, and busily
seeking the finest marching bands for the parade, and it just won't be
the same if you aren't there to enjoy it with us.
Won't you please mark your calendars? Expect
the ride specials and prize raffles as usual, and be prepared for new and
exciting additions to the lineup of fun activities.
New Member
The Department welcomes our newest member,
Cody Clark. After completing new firefighter training, Cody will be promoted
to the rank of Probationary Fire Fighter.
Membership Opportunities
The Apalachin Fire Department is an equal
opportunity volunteer organization. If you are interested in working with
us, we are interested in finding the best fit for your current skills.
In addition, training is offered both in the department and through New
York State.
If you'd like to know more about membership,
please give member Brian Rieber a call at 765-2974. Brian has advanced
to Yellow Tag status. He is now qualified as an Exterior Firefighter. Congratulations,
Brian!
Bob Squier - Fifty Year Member Celebration
On April 9, the members of the Fire Department
and the community gathered at Station 1 to pay tribute to Bob Squier for
50 years of service to his community. Bob has held positions ranging from
firefighter to assistant chief, and is currently an active member of the
Fire Police, as well as serving as a Fire Commissioner. A modest,
unassuming fellow, Bob expressed his thanks for the accolades, and shared
that he would rather fight a fire than have to speak in front of so many
people any time soon! Thanks again for all your years of dedicated service.
Bob.
Did You Know?
Many courses offered locally through the
New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control can count for course
credit towards degree programs through Corning Community College.
Wildfire Season Is Here!
Outdoor burning is illegal in the Town
of Owego under New York State law, as it is in any NYS town with a population
greater than 20,000. It is not only illegal, it is unwise, especially on
these spring days when there is lots of dried, dead grass and leaf litter
around to provide fuel, and unpredictable spring winds to spread even the
most carefully tended fire onto neighboring areas.
If you have any questions about the policies
on open burning, you can contact NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
in Kirkwood at 1-800-775-2510
One More Way You Can Help
Make it easier for us to help you in the
event of a fire in your neighborhood. Please trim brush, bushes, or shrubs
at least three feet back away from a fire hydrant on your property. Being
able to locate and access a hydrant quickly can make a life-or-death difference
at a fire! If you notice a hydrant in your neighborhood is leaking, missing
caps or seems loose, please contact the Town of Owego Water Department
at 625-2197.
