Recently I attended a meeting of the Nichols town board.

 In attendance were two groups concerned about town zoning enforcement concerning mobile homes. The first requested better enforcement in a specified area. The second complained that the enforcement in their area was too stern.

 With the first group the town board patiently discussed the involved legal proceedings in which the town was involved. With the second group the board talked at some length about the possible establishment of permanent residence in what was in fact a camping area.

 I was much impressed. To me the procedure of the board was much in keeping with the spirit of our founders of representative government. I compare this procedure of the Nichols board with that of the county legislature in which matters have been decided before the meeting starts and comments by members of the public are limited to five minutes.
