On April 3, nineteen firefighters from
Tioga and Chemung Counties graduated from Firefighter 1S-1068 class.
The students completed
the course on March 31, and officially graduated on April 3. More than
100 people attended the graduation ceremony, which was hosted by the Candor
Fire Company Auxiliary at the Candor Fire Station.
Instructor Mark Warfle,
of Owego, started the ceremony with great joy in calling out the fire fighters'
companies, like they normally would at their classes, for one last time.
To complete the course,
the firefighters attended a four-hour class twice a week, sometimes three
times a week, from January to April. They and their loved ones gave up
hours of family time to attend the classes (which lasted 87 hours) and
travel to class sites in Candor, Owego, Vestal, and Montour Falls.
Joyce Shaylor
(pictured at right), of Candor, was presented with a plaque for her outstanding
service and dedication during the classes. Shaylor, who is President of
the Candor Fire Company Auxiliary, prepared meals for the fire fighters
when they were taking the classes. Shaylor and two other auxiliary members,
Linda Owens and Christina Shaylor, traveled to the Fred Singer Fire Training
Site in Vestal, and to the Montour Falls Fire Academy in Montour Falls
to feed the fire fighters.
