As yet only one type of new voting machine has been accepted by the state of New York, namely the Sequoia ballot scanner. Your elections commissioners have ordered the necessary number for use in the coming presidential elections.

The new voting machines will be far different from the mechanical lever type that we have used for so many years. When we go behind a privacy screen we will find a ballot printed on a special heavy paper stock. After marking our choices, we will feed this ballot into a machine that will record our choices and store the ballot within.

Recently, the elections commissioners and I met with the superintendent of public works to devise a means for storing the machines and accumulated ballots in a way that will provide the necessary security and yet allow ready access. We believe that the best space for this is one now temporarily occupied by a major
piece of IT equipment.

Before the flood this space was occupied by the Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The legislature may have some tough choices to make.
