AYAA:
Play Ball!
It's once again that time for the kids in Apalachin, ages 4 through 14, and even your friends and neighbors in Little Meadows, Owego, Vestal, Campville and West Corners, to sign up for another great season of Apalachin instructional league tee-ball (ages 4 thru 7), baseball and softball minors (7 thru 10), baseball and softball majors (9 thru 13), and Teener baseball (12 thru 16). Registration for the 2008 season for all participants will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday February 9 and 10, and then again the following weekend, February 16 and 17, at Apalachin Fire Station #1, 306 Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin. Practice starts in April, and the games are in May and June. All children who want to play, and volunteers
that want to help, must register in
If you are unable to make it at the above dates or times, or have trouble obtaining proof of age, contact league president Dave Strano at 625-4888, or any of the board members - their names and contact information can be found on the league web site at www.eteamz.com/apalachin. One particular need we have this year is filling the position of manager and coaches for the teener league team. Kids this age are fairly well-versed in the fundamentals, and will need to learn from someone that knows the strategic aspects of the game. Our ideal candidates will have played the game competitively themselves. The AYAA is also looking for big-hearted volunteers and sponsors that love our community and kids as much as we do – if you can coach, umpire, sell concessions, keep score, work a scoreboard, be a team mom or dugout boss during games, then you've come to the right place! Or maybe you can't put in as much time as we need, but you want to help defer the costs of the uniforms, equipment, insurance or any of our other myriad of expenses, contact Dave or any board member. For kids ages 7 through 9, we hope to restart our preseason indoor training sessions very soon. The goal of this is to take youngsters that are graduating from tee-ball to the minors, or those in the minors still not comfortable with throwing and catching, and build those skills so they can take the field in April with confidence. For those older or younger, or those who made a minors allstar team, this clinic is not for them - kids can't move up in skills if they are getting hurt throwing and catching the ball, and that's our main focus. So if you find yourself driving down Pennsylvania Ave any Saturday or weeknight and see games in full swing, even if you don't know anyone on the teams – stop on by Muth park, buy a hotdog and a soda and root, root, root for your hometown kids! We'll see you there!
