 It's January 1983. Time magazine announces its "Man" of the Year for 1982 isn't a man at all, but a machine: the computer.

 Bill Clinton is inaugurated as Governor of Arkansas for the second time.

 On Broadway, the hit musical Annie closes after 2,377 performances.

 The nation's top box office stars are Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor, Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Richard Gere, Paul Newman, and Harrison Ford.

 President Reagan's son, Ron, 24, quits ballet to pursue other interests.

 Oscar-winning film maker George Cukor, 83, dies.

 Football coach Bear Bryant dies.

 Independent truckers go on strike to protest gasoline and road use taxes.

 Superbowl XVII is played in Pasadena, California. The Washington Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins 27 to 17.

 The movie Gandhi wins five Golden Globe Awards including best foreign picture, best director, best screenwriter, and best actor and best new motion picture star awards for Ben Kingsley. Tootsie is chosen as Best Comedy and its star Dustin Hoffman wins Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.

 Lotus 1-2-3, a spreadsheet application for personal computers, is released.

 Apple Computer unveils Lisa, a personal computer controlled by a "mouse" that causes an arrow on the screen to point to tiny pictures called "icons." Lisa sells for $9,995. 

 In the Southern Tier, a Saturday snow storm dumps 16 inches of snow, causing states of emergency in Broome and Tioga Counties.

 In the Town of Union, Savin lays off 275 people.

 About 2,000 people - mostly women - attend the Richard Simmons show at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Tickets are $8.50.

 Ellen Paccone of Apalachin is named the executive director of the Tioga County Industrial Development Agency.

 In Berkshire, an elderly couple is found murdered in their home/general store. Less than 24 hours after discovery of the crime, a Vestal man turns himself in. As police attempt to take another man into custody, the suspect shoots himself in the head.

 The play Tintypes is presented at the Cider Mill Playhouse. Tickets are $8.00.

 TV shows premiering this month include The A-Team Mama's Family and The Family Tree.

 Movies playing in local theaters include Best Friends, The Chosen, The Dark Crystal, Kiss Me Goodbye, Tootsie, Six Weeks, The Toy, The Verdict, Airplane II, 48 Hours, Gandhi, Gregory's Girl, and Time Rider.

 Top tunes include Down Under by Men at Work, The Girl is Mine by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, Dirty Laundry by Don Henley, Maneater by Daryl Hall and John Oates, and Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye.

 And a 1983 Buick Le Sabre costs $9,875 and a 1983 Cutlass Sierra costs $8,982. Gas is about $1.21 per gallon.
