It's May 1982. The World's Fair opens in Knoxville, Tennessee.
 Britain and Argentina are at war over the Falkland Islands. Prince Andrew, 22, serves in the war as a co-pilot of a Sea King antisubmarine helicopter. 
 Teri Lea Uttley, 20, of Arkansas, is crowned Miss USA.

 Governor Carey names Kitty Carlisle Hart  to another term as chairman of the NYS Council on the Arts.

 NBC airs the spectacular 10-hour miniseries Marco Polo over four consecutive nights. Ken Marshal, (pictured on the cover of the May 15-21, 1982 TV Guide) stars in the title role.

 ABC cancels Mork & Mindy, Strike Force, Today's FBI, and Taxi. CBS cancels Lou Grant.

 The last episode of Barney Miller airs. 

 The New York Islanders win the Stanley Cup.

 The drinking age in New York State is raised from 18 to 19.

 Soap fans flood the NBC switchboard with calls after Days of Our Lives character Dr. Marlena Evans is killed by the Salem Strangler.

 Former Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, 35, fails to win a majority in the 

Democratic Primary for his old office, and will face a run-off next month.

 Pope John Paul II begins a six-day visit to Britain.

 In Tioga County, an open house and formal dedication are held at the new Social Services Building on Route 38.

 The Southern Tier Homebuilders' Association sponsors the House and Home Improvement Fair Days at the Vestal Plaza. The three-day event is the first sponsored by the organization.

 The Ross Park Zoo is building a woodland pond exhibit which will house otters, beavers, and other animals.

 Tioga County Legislature declares May 11 to be Harold E. Newcomb Day, in honor of his years' of community service.

 In Owego, a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house is held at the courthouse to celebrate the completion of its renovation. Every room of the 110-year-old building was redecorated, new floors were installed. The dropped ceiling was removed from the court room, and new lighting, woodwork, and benches were installed.

 Jerry Lee Lewis performs at the Arena in Binghamton. Tickets cost $9.50 and $8.50.

 Voters approve Owego-Apalachin School District's $10.5  million budget for 1982-83. Richard Wold and Charles Tyo are re-elected to the OA School Board.

 The 4th Owego Run for Hope takes place in Hickories Park.

 The Dwight Block in Binghamton is demolished.

 Movies playing in local theaters include If You Could Hear What I Hear, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Chariots of Fire, Porky's, On Golden Pond, Quest for Fire, Partners, Midnight, Victor/Victoria, Wrong is Right, Conan the Barbarian, A Stranger is Waiting, and Visiting Hours.

 Top tunes include Chariots of Fire by Vangelis, Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, and Don't Talk to Strangers by Rick Springfield.
