Movies vs. Comics by Anne O. Stout When I was middle school age and junior
high age I can remember enjoying some comic books but was never real crazy
about them and never started collecting; but has anyone noticed how the
movies lately are imitating the comic
Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed some of them like Spiderman, X-Men, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and some others but I am wondering why? If Hollywood and the movie producers are running out of ideas, the books stores seem to be full of new books hitting the market every day; why not look into them? Everyone enjoys the concept of a super hero fighting to right the wrongs in the world but is that realistic? I mean it is good to escape from realism sometimes but how many times? So many of the novels on the market today, rather fiction or non-fiction seem to be taking from real life experiences and there should be an equal balance of those movies with the fantasy, don't you think? Sometimes I am just not in the mood to watch some super hero make his world better then walk out of the movie theatre to find the real world hasn't changed a bit. Course some of the bad guys in the films of these comics are not exactly the ones you want to run into either. Does that give us hope if someone ever did come to be like Dr. Octopus that Spiderman would show up then? Strange how as an adult I am suddenly inundated with the comic books I did not even read as a kid. Another movie phenomenon is some actually are coming from video games; remember when it was the other way around? A movie would hit the big screen and get good reviews then the merchandise and toys from it would come out. Now the merchandise beats the film, or in the video games case, they are coming first. Movies also are copying ones we watched in earlier years, remakes as they like to call them but if you saw the original, the remakes never measure up to the first attempt. Many of them take a serious movie or show and spin it into another genre; like a drama in the first attempt later becomes a comedy. Kind of strange to us movie fans! Some things haven't changed about the movie industry; if a movie is successful the merchandise floods the market. How many remember the items that came out after the first three Star Wars? Course back then we had no idea we were actually crowding to the theatres to see parts 4, 5, & 6; and years later we would view 1, 2. & 3. Well back to the original thought, producers start reading the novels out, maybe you will find the next award winning movie. The comics are great but how many of these movies are getting Academy Awards? The
