October  8, 1981 - Four Presidents pose for a portrait prior to leaving for Egypt and President Anwar Sadat's Funeral.

 It's October 1981. Disney World celebrates its 10th anniversary.

 Egyptian President Anwar Sadat is assassinated.

 At the Country Music Awards, Barbara Mandrell wins as Entertainer of the Year and Top Female Vocalist. George Jones is chosen Top Male Vocalist. Song of the Year is "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Single of the Year is "Elvira."
 President Reagan says the US is in a light economic recession.

 Our country celebrates the 200th anniversary of the British surrender at Yorktown. President Reagan and French President Mitterand attend a re-enactment of Lord Cornwallis' surrender.

 A car bomb explodes near a synagogue in Antwerp, Belgium, killing two and injuring 99 people.

 Oscar winning costume designer Edith Head, 73, dies.

 Diana, the new Princess of Wales, makes her first public tour when she and Prince Charles make a three-day visit to Wales.

 The Philadelphia Phillies are sold for $30.175 million.

 The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the NY Yankees to win the World Series. 

A jewelry store at the Vestal Plaza is robbed when two armed men break the front display window and grab $50,000 worth of jewelry. A Vestal patrolman who was in the store surprises the thieves who fire two shots before running away.

 Owego holds a three-day Oktoberfest to celebrate the renovation of the courthouse and the end of street construction. Events include a parade, re-dedication and tours of the courthouse, concerts, auctions, and fireworks.

 The Tri-Cities Opera opens its 1981-82 season with Rigoletto.

 The Parkview in Owego has a new sign on its building which warns that parking is for customers and "all others will be crushed and burned."

 A pet store in Johnson City is robbed by an armed man who binds the cashier's legs and hands and takes $60 from the cash register.

 Movies playing in local theaters include Rich and Famous, Paternity starring Burt Reynolds, Body Heat, Only When I Laugh, The French Lieutenant's Woman, True Confessions, and Looker.

 TV shows premiering this month include Lewis and Clark; Gimme a Break; Love, Sidney starring Tony Randall, The Fall Guy with Lee Majors; Today's F.B.I.; and Mr. Merlin.

 Halloween costumes for sale include Star Wars and Dukes of Hazzard characters, super heroes such as Spiderman, Batman, Superman, and the Lone Ranger, The World of Strawberry Shortcake, and monsters such as Dracula, werewolves, and vampires.
