FLOOD OF 2006

After several days of torrential downpour, the Susquehanna River and area creeks overflowed their banks and flooded many areas of Tioga County. The Susquehanna reached flood stage on Wednesday, June 28, and crested late on the evening on Thursday, June 29. The Susquehanna River reached record levels, and inundated areas that have never flooded before. Some of the hardest hit areas were the Fairgrounds area off Main Street in Owego, the flats area of Owego, Marshland Road in Apalachin, the Main Street - Wayside Lane area of Apalachin, and areas of Campville, Smithboro, Lounsberry, Nichols, Barton, and Tioga Center. Tioga County was in a state of emergency and many businesses closed. Many events were cancelled or postponed. The Tioga County Fair has been cancelled, and the Cars in the Park Show has been moved to September 16 and 17. At Tioga Downs, three days of racing were cancelled, and the opening of the gaming floor has been moved to July 8. At press time, several area remain under water including the intersection Route 434 and Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin.
