Train Wreck in Apalachin
The Emerald Express, Number 139, which has been sitting
in front of the old railway station on Route 434 in Apalachin since August
1998, was dealt a final blow by the recent spell of high winds at the end
of February. The engine had been in a state of disrepair for the last several
years.
Picture below, is the Emerald Express #139 taken during
the grand opening of Pat Mitchell's Ice Cream in 1998. Pictured above is
the train as it appeared on Wednesday, March 1. The engine collapsed in
on itself, the cow-catcher on the front of the engine broke apart, and
the engineer compartment collapsed. Pat Mitchell's Ice Cream closed several
years ago. Subway of Apalachin is currently operating at the train station.
