Jazz Night at OA School The Owego Apalachin Music Department presents a high point of the performing year when Jazz Night is held Thursday, March 16 at 7:30 pm in the Owego Apalachin Theater off George Street in Owego. Representing the Owego Apalachin Middle School will be the SOS Jazz Band and the Elm Street Jazz Band. The Owego Free Academy Jazz Band and Jazz Band II will headline the program. Featured artist will be trumpeter Tom Davis of Canadaigua, NY. Mr. Davis earned his undergraduate degree in music education from Ithaca College and his masters degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music. Mr. Davis's writing credits include the New Orleans Brass Quintet, the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, Wynton Marsalis and Sir Roland Hanna. Mr. Davis will be meeting with OA students on March 15 and 16. He will be rehearsing his music with all of the bands, coaching students on Jazz Improvisation, and will even be meeting with Music Theory Classes to talk about composition. "I find Mr. Davis' music to be very challenging to play but also very appealing for the performers," said Daniel Fabricius, Director of Bands at OFA. "His compositional techniques are interesting, he uses a full range of instrumental colors, and his use of layered rhythms creates a great effect. The student feedback has been very positive so far as they have begun learning Mr. Davis' compositions." Admission is free and the entire community is encouraged to attend. It promises to be an exciting and swinging night. The Community Press a free newspaper, published monthly serving the Tioga County, New York, area Copyright 2006 Brown Enterprise and Marketing |
