25 Years Ago It's December 1980. John Lennon, 40, is shot to death as he and wife Yoko Ono enter their luxury apartment building, the Dakota, on Manhattan's upper West Side. Representative John Jenrette, D-SC, resigns. President-elect Ronald Reagan names members of his cabinet, including Alexander Haig as Secretary of State and Donald T. Regan as Tresurary Secretary. In Stowe, Vermont, fire destroys the Von Trapp Family Lodge. Baroness Maria Von Trapp, whose life inspired the musical "The Sound of Music," escapes with only the clothes on her back. Iran threatens to try the American hostages as spies unless the United States meets their demands. Time magazine names Ronald Reagan as the 1980 Man of the Year. Comic Sam Levene dies at the age of 75. In Owego, Stack's Fine Furniture at the corner of Front and Lake Street store changes ownership. The mayor of the Village of Owego wants the county to remove the the 190-foot radio tower which was recently put up in the village. The mayor complains that the tower dominates the village's skyline and destroys the historical quality and 19th Century charm of Owego. The Harlem Globetrotters appear at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. Tickets cost $7.50 and $6.00. In Owego, yellow ribbons representing the American being held hostage in Iran are put up near the manger on the courthouse lawn. May local residents fly the flag on Christmas day in remembrance of the hostages in Iran. In Susquehanna, PA, fire destroys the Acme Supermarket. The Southern Tier has a cold Christmas - the temperature sinks to a record low of 18 degrees at 8:30 in the morning. Project Green Grass is held at the Holiday Day Arena in Binghamton. Movies playing in local theaters include Flash Gordon, Stir Crazy, Popeye, Fame, Ordinary People, Private Benjamin, Any Which Way You Can, Aristocats, Seems Like Old Times, The Formula, and First Family. Magnum, P.I. premieres on CBS with Tom Selleck starring as an ex-Navy officer turned detective in Hawaii. Top tunes include (Just Like) Starting Over by John Lennon, More Than I Can Say by Leo Sayer, Love on the Rocks by Neil Diamond, Lady by Kenny Rogers, and Hungry Heart by Bruce Springsteen.
