Apalachin Lions to Sponsor Student for Leadership Workshop

The Apalachin Lions Club, in conjunction with their parent organization (Lions Clubs International), is sponsoring a sophomore student from Owego Free Academy and Vestal Senior High School to participate in the regional Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) workshop. It will be held in May 2006.

The Apalachin Lions believe that HOBY will benefit the participant as well as his/her peers, the school, and the community at large.

HOBY was started in 1958 by actor Hugh O'Brian, who is best known for playing frontier lawman Wyatt Earp in the TV show "Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" which ran from 1955 to 1961 on ABC. He also starred in the TV show "Search" in the early 1970s.

O'Brian was inspired to put together the first youth leadership seminar in 1958 after he returned from a nine-day visit with Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa.

Now, more than 8,000 sophomores attend HOBY leadership seminars each year.

For more information, contact the guidance department members: Thomas Westcott at Owego Free Academy, and Judith St. John at Vestal Senior High School. Or visit the HOBY Web site at www.hoby.org
