The Oregon State Quarter

The third State Quarter of 2005 honors Oregon. The coin's design  features Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States, Wizard Island, as well as Watchman and Hillman Peaks on the lake's rim. The coin bears the inscriptions Crater Lake, and 1859, the year Oregon became a state.

Crater Lake is a unique and stunning natural treasure, formed more than 7,700 years ago by the collapse of Mt. Mazama in what is now southern Oregon. At 1,949 feet, the lake has a record clarity depth of 134 feet, mainly caused by its isolation from incoming streams and rivers. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt established Crater Lake National Park.

Other themes considered for the Oregon State Quarter included   the Oregon Trail, Mt. Hood with the Columbia River, and a wild Chinook salmon.
Earlier this year, coins honoring California and Minnesota were issued. Quarters honoring Kansas and West Virginia will also be issued this year.
