25 Years Ago

 It's August 1980. The 22nd Olympic Games end in Moscow with the Russians winning 80 gold medals. The United States boycotted the games to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

 Britain's Queen Mother celebrates her 80th birthday.

 Mount St. Helens erupts again.

 In Monaco, the royal palace announces that Princess Caroline, 23, and husband Philippe Junot, 40, have officially separated.

 The Democratic National Convention takes place in New York City. Rep. Morris Udall (D-AZ) is the keynote speaker. Senator Edward Kennedy withdraws from the presidential race, and Jimmy Carter wins the nomination. Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton is among the speakers at the convention.

 Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank, dies in Switzerland at the age of 91.

 The 52 Americans being held hostage in Iran mark their 300th day in captivity.

 Lady Diana Spencer accepts an invitation from Prince Charles to be a royal guest for the annual Cowes Week Regatta. It is Diana's second invitation from Charles - the first being one to attend a polo match last month. The British Press have not yet ‘discovered' the prince's latest lady friend, however.

 The Triple Cities has experienced six sightings of black bears in the past month.

 Local farmers have a good year for hay, corn, and alfalfa.

 James Taylor performs at the Broome County Veteran's Memorial Arena with Kim Carnes. Tickets cost $9.50 and $8.50

 The Tioga County Human Resources Building is broken into for the second time in two weeks. Offices are ransacked and equipment is stolen.

 The 8th Annual BC Open begins at the En Joie Golf Club.

 The most listened to local radio stations are WQYT (FM), WAAL (FM), WMRV (FM), WNBF (AM), WENE (AM), and WWWT (FM), a disco station based in Owego.

 Top tunes include Magic by Olivia Newton-John, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me by Billy Joel, Little Jeannie by Elton John, Cupid/I've Love You for a Long Time by Spinners, Shining Star by Manhattans, and Sailing by Christopher Cross.

 Movies playing at local theaters include Herbie Goes Bananas, The Hunter, The Empire Strikes Back, Airplane, Caddyshack, The Final Countdown starring Charlton Heston, Brubaker, The Blue Lagoon, Smokey and the Bandit II, Prom Night, Zombie, My Bodyguard, The Mountain Men, Midnight Express, and Dressed to Kill.

 The networks - NBC, ABC, and CBS - are forced to delay the start of the fall season because of the Hollywood actor's strike which has halted production of new series.
 Dallas star Larry Hagman settles his salary dispute with CBS - looks like J.R. Ewing will survive that gunshot. (But who shot J.R.?)

 This season, a new John Boy played by Robert Wightman returns to The Waltons. On Little House on the Prairie, the character of Laura Ingalls will marry. On The Facts of Life, only three of the original girls return and a ‘street smart' student is added to the cast. Tanya Roberts joins Charlie's Angels as angel Julie Robert. Richie Cunningham has been written out of Happy Days. Laverne and Shirley relocate to Los Angeles. And as All in the Family becomes Archie Bunker's Place, the cast learns to carry on 
after Edith's off-screen death.

 What's "in" these days: patriotism, Western clothing and cowboy hats, hot tubs, woodburning stoves, the flavor mint (as in the new mint M&Ms), sunflower seeds, country bars and country dancing, hang gliding,  harvest gold appliances for your kitchen (avocado is out!), computer games, Hagen-daas, smaller cars, ceiling fans, and John Travolta.
