25 Years Ago It's July 1980. Pope John Paul II is visiting Brazil. Roger Mudd moves from CBS to NBC News. Bjorn Borg beats John McEnroe to win his 5th Wimbledon title. Evonne Goolagong wins the Ladies' Singles at Wimbledon. New York Governor Hugh Carey signs a proclamation making I Love New York the state's theme song. President Carter signs the draft registration bill which requires all men born in 1960 and 1961 to register for Selective Service. Miss USA, Shawn Weatherly, 20, wins the Miss Universe contest in Seoul Korea. The emcee for the event is Bob Barker. Republican Presidential nominee Ronald Reagan's list of potential running mates is said to include former UN Ambassador George Bush, Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Senator Paul Laxalt of Nevada. At the GOP convention in Detroit, Reagan chooses George Bush as his running mate after former President Gerald R. Ford turns down the offer to run on the ticket as the vice presidential candidate. Rose Kennedy celebrates her 90th birthday by leading a parade of grandparents in honor of America's elder citizens and to raise money for the mentally retarded. Iran frees one of the American hostages. Richard Owens, 28, is released because of medical reasons. Fifty-two Americans are still being held hostage. Mt. St. Helens erupts again, sending gray clouds ten miles into the sky. Actor Peter Sellers, 54, dies of a heart attack in London. He was best known for playing Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies. Comedian Richard Pryor is released from the hospital where he has been since suffering severe burns last month. The Shah of Iran dies in an Egyptian hospital. In Moscow, the 22nd Olympic games begin. The United States, Germany, and Japan are boycotting the games to protest the Soviet Union's military invasion of Afghanistan. Other nations' athletes who are participating in the games choose to fly the Olympic flag instead of their national flags as a way of protesting the invasion. In Binghamton, the Ritz Tea Room, a long time fixture on Chenango Street, closes. The owners plan to move to the former Pancho's Pit in Endicott and open a restaurant called Picasso's. Britts Department Store - which has been an anchor of the Vestal Plaza for 18 years - will close in the fall. The 121st Annual Tioga County Fair opens. General admission is $2.
