County Watch
Recently Gwen Smith, who lives near 231 Main Street in Owego,
showed me a copy of a letter from the New York State Historic Preservation
Office to the Tioga County Legislature complaining that the legislature
had completely ignored the Historic Preservation office while planning
to demolish the former school building at 231. To me, this is just another
instance of irresponsibility on the part of the legislature over the
The proper action for any county building is to maintain it properly while it is in use. Then, if and when it is no longer needed, it ought to be sold to the highest bidder at public auction. Instead, the former county legislatures have deliberately trashed this building and the present legislature is spending our money in an attempt to control its future use. Therefore, I intend to campaign for a seat on the legislature at the next election. I believe that I can exercise more influence for the people of District 4 than either Mr. Johnson or Mr. Burns because I have a wider public support throughout the county. I hope also to continue keeping you informed through the good offices of this publication.
