Golf for Youth Tournament in Waverly Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County (CCE Tioga) is holding its first annual "Supporting Local Youth" golf tournament at on Saturday, June 11, at The Club at Shepard Hills on Route 17C in Waverly. The golf course at Shepard Hills stretches across the side of Waverly Hill providing spectacular views of the valley. It presents a challenge to even the most seasoned golfer and usually forces golfers to use every club in their bag. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 8:00 am with a captain and crew format made up of teams of four. Team prizes will be awarded to the first three places, and individual men's and women's prizes will be awarded for the longest drive and closest to the pin. Afterward, a barbecue will take place on the club's patio overlooking the 18th hole. The cost is $260 per team, which includes four greens fees, two carts, and four meals. Mulligans are available for $20 per team, and meals for non-golfing guests are only $15. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit CCE Tioga's Family Resource Centers in Waverly and Owego and the Phoenix Kids Café & Youth Center in Waverly. The Family Resource Centers are free for families with young children. They offer nurturing play spaces, parent education, family activities, support groups and referral to local services. The Phoenix Kids Café and Youth Center gives students in grades seven through twelve a safe and nurturing place to go after school and provides nutrition education, job skills training, free food, tutoring and other activities that promote positive and healthy youth development. Best Buy is the tournament's major sponsor, but individual holes can still be sponsored for $75. Call CCE Tioga at 687-4020 to register for the tournament. But hurry. It's only open to 26 teams.
