 It's June 1980. Cable News Network (CNN) begins broadcasting.

 President Jimmy Carter now has 1,921 delegates - more than enough to secure the Democratic Presidential Nomination.

 At the Daytime Emmy Awards, The Guiding Light is chosen as outstanding drama. Douglass Watson of Another World and Judith Light of One Life to Live win for best actor. Phil Donahue wins as best talk show host, and his show is chosen as best talk show.

 Caroline Kennedy, 22, graduates from Radcliffe College.

 The Broadway musical Evita wins seven Tony awards including best musical. Children of a Lesser God is chosen as best play.

 Author Henry Miller, 88, dies.

 Comedian Richard Pryor, 38, is severely burned when the materials he was using to "freebase" explode.

 Mount St. Helens explodes in what witnesses describe as an atom bomb-like black cloud.

 Actor Milburn Stone, 75, dies. He was best known for his 20-year role of Doc Adams on Gunsmoke.

 Jack Niklaus wins the US Open.

 Who will be Ronald Reagan's running mate? Reagan himself says he has not yet made that decision. There is speculation that former President Gerald Ford is being considered.
 At the Venice Summit Conference, Western leaders condemn the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

 Pope John Paul II beatifies Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the "Lily of the Mohawks."
 A five alarm fire in a 42-story Manhattan skyscraper injures more than 100 firefighters.

 Esther Cleveland Bosanquet, 86, daughter of President Grover Cleveland, dies. She was the only child of a President to be born in the White House.

 Rising gas prices cause the Tioga County Sheriff's Office to be over budget. Sheriff Ayers orders  patrol cars to be parked for at least 15 minutes every hour.

 Voters in the Owego-Apalachin School District approve the $9.8 million budget. Retired teacher Finkle Rosenberg defeats Richard Wold and  incumbent school board member Fred Brown, Jr., to win a five-year-term on the school board.

 More than 500 rafters brave the chilly weather to participate in the Yegatta Regatta.
 The Tioga County Legislature wants to replace the old Social Services Building which has been declared unsafe.

 Near freezing weather during the second week in June threatens Owego's strawberry crop.

 The 10th Annual Owego to Nichols Raft Race is held.

 Merchants in the Village of Owego organize a special event on the sidewalks to celebrate the strawberry.

 Metro's Restaurant celebrates its 30th anniversary.

 SUNY Binghamton leases the Colonial Inn for student housing. On campus, many double rooms are being configured to house three students, and many floor lounges are being converted into rooms to ease the housing crunch.

 Savin announces plans to build a $3 million plant in Owego.

 John Denver appears at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. More than 7,000 people give the singer three standing ovations after the 2 1/2 hour concert. 
 Fans of the TV show Dallas are spending the summer wondering "Who Shot JR?"
 The David Letterman Show, a live, 90-minutes daytime show, debuts on NBC.
 Movies playing in local theaters include Up the Academy, Tom Horn, The Long Riders, A Small Circle of Friends, Norma Rae, Urban Cowboy, Bronco Billy with Clint Eastwood, Wholly Moses, Humanoids from the Deep, Apocalypse Now, Friday the 13th,  Rough Cut, Fame, The Blues Brothers, Mary Poppins, The Rose, The Shining, and The Empire Strikes Back.

 Top tunes include Coming Up by Paul McCartney, Funky Town by Lipps Inc., The Rose by Bette Midler, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me by Billy Joel, and Against the Wind by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

 Beginning teachers with a bachelor's degree earn $9,500 a year in the Vestal School District. Teachers with 15 years' experience earn $15,935 per year.
 And U-pick strawberries cost 65 cents per quart.
