• 54th Opening Day
May 7, Saturday
Highlights of the first day of the 54th season of Owego Little
League include a traditional parade, 27 teams on Nick Raftis Memorial Field
for Opening Day ceremonies, and 13 baseball, tee ball and softball games.
The Parade
The parade forms from 8:00 a.m. to 8:15 am on Temple Street by
the Owego Police Department. Players should report to their manager and
coach. Volunteer Parade Chairman John Loftus moves the parade at 8:30 am.
Parade route is North Avenue to George Street to Hyde Park. Traffic is
stopped to allow the enthusiastic Little Leaguers to march and enjoy their
very special day. Players and league officials say Thank You to the motorists
for their patience.
Opening Day Ceremony
Hyde Park welcomes all teams, supporters, families and friends.
VFW Color Guard raises the American and POW/MIA flags at the Elks Flag
Pole. Fourth and fifth graders from Owego Elementary sing the National
Anthem. Teams and league officers are introduced. Traditional "First Pitch"
opens the baseball, tee ball and softball seasons.
Vietnam Veterans Honored
Owego Little League honors all veterans especially Vietnam
Veterans who will march to celebrate Vietnam Veterans Recognition Week.
Thirteen Games
Hyde Park has five diamonds for 13 Opening Day games. Five games
at 10:30 am, five more at 12:30 pm, and three at 3:30 pm.
• Call for Volunteers from Parents
"We do it for the kids." More volunteer help is needed from parents.
President Steve Gregory needs a head umpire, base and plate umpires, team
moms, concession stand attendants, helpers during games, and a training
coordinator for coaches and assistants.
• Games
Monday, May 9 – Play Ball at 6 p.m. Five games each weeknight
at 6 p.m. and more on Saturday mornings.
• Picture Day
May 14, Saturday
Coordinator Joe Fuller announces Team and Player Picture Day
for baseball, tee ball and girls softball from 8:30 am to 1 pm at Owego
Elementary School. Teener League Picture Day Wednesday, June 1, 5 p.m.
to 6 p.m. at OES.
