Presbyterian Union Church Welcomes New Pastor
Bridges was installed as the church's pastor in late February. He previously served as a pastor in North Carolina. Bridges moved to the area with his wife, Julie, and two children, Ashleigh and Parrish. "The main impression I have of Owego and the greater Tioga County area is that there is a strong sense of community among the friendly people who live here. There seems to be a sincere desire among many people to be helpful and useful for their community and neighbors. Also, there seems to be a high level of spiritual interest as an important priority in many peoples' lives," Bridges said. Bridges previously served over a period of about twelve years as a solo pastor, youth pastor, associate minister and assistant chaplain in churches in North Carolina, Mississippi, and California. He has worked with people in a multi-cultural Korean-American ministry, assisted living ministry, small membership churches in rural communities, and counseling for a Good Samaritan Center and domestic abuse agency. "I hope I can be of help as I provide ministerial support in various ministries through the church and through community involvement." "I perceive First Presbyterian Union Church as one of several Owego Christian ministries desiring to do good in their mission field locally and beyond. It is a church with a past history of influential ministry to the community of Owego for many decades now. In its current mission, the church is seeking to respond and reach out to various needs within the community and share the love of God with all people. We are praying that we will be found faithful to God's calling and purpose for us to share the Gospel, to help transform lives and produce disciples for Jesus Christ as we seek to accomplish God's will." Bridges hopes to accomplish his goals of equipping people through the example of preaching, teaching God's word, and spiritual counseling. "I desire to be a participant in promoting unity within the community and its churches and in its outreach efforts. I hope to be an influential participant in reaching the community for Christ and by being available to the people and community at large," Bridges concluded. First Presbyterian Union Church is at the corner of North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego. Services are 10:30 am. All are welcome. For further information, contact the church office at 687-1682.
