All Roads Now Lead to Owego

Congressman wants everyone to know how to get to OwegoWASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-New Hartford) has asked the New York State (NYS) Department of Transportation to add Owego to the 17 West highway sign at the junction of Interstate 88 and Route 17 West, just north of Binghamton. The existing large highway sign mentions only Elmira.

In a letter to New York State Commissioner of Transportation Joseph Boardman, the Congressman said, "All roads now lead to Owego, home to Lockheed Martin and the site for construction of the new Presidential helicopter. The community and company are growing, and more people are visiting Owego every day. This new contract award to Lockheed Martin and Team US101 will improve the economy and tourism throughout the Southern Tier region. The employees of Lockheed Martin earned this contract the old fashioned way - with hard work. I urge the NYS Department of Transportation to replace the existing highway sign - and help put Owego back on the map."

On January 28, the U.S. Navy awarded Team US101, led by Lockheed Martin, a $1.6 billion contract to build the next fleet of Marine One Presidential helicopters.
Boehlert observed that Lockheed Martin Owego is now hiring by the hundreds. In addition, contractors are coming in droves to build a $30 million plant expansion. "We want to help them get there with clearer directions."
