Who Visits Tioga County?

 The Tioga County Tourism Office recently completed a conversion study of individuals who had requested information about visiting Tioga County in 2003 and 2004. Approximately 200 responses were returned via mail and e-mail. It should be noted that not all respondents answered all questions.  A similar study was performed by the Tourism Office in 2001.

 Based on those responses, the following results were determined: 

 • 90% of the people who requested visitor information recalled receiving it. 
 • 36% learned about Tioga County through the New York State Travel Guide, followed closely by 31% who looked up their information from the Internet 
 • 61% of the persons who requested information actually made the trip to Tioga County. 24% of the respondents who did not visit indicated that they planned to visit Tioga County in the near future.
 • The respondents indicated that their main purpose for making the trip was vacation/sightseeing at 35% Attending an event, festival or attraction followed as number 2 with 13%.
 • 69% surveyed stayed overnight. The average length of stay was 4.6 nights. 24% stayed at hotel/motels, 6% stayed with friends/relatives, 4% stayed at a bed and breakfast, and 7% stayed in a campground/trailer/RV park. 
 • 44% of the traveling parties consisted of adults, while 22% of the visitors traveled with children under 18 years of age.
 • Visitors spent an average of  $220.44 per stay while visiting Tioga County. 
 • 36% of respondents visited Tioga County in the summer, and 51% that visited said they would return again in the future.
 •  43% said their experience here compared to other destinations was one of the best or better than average, while 44% rated the value of their visit for the dollar as one of the best or better than average.
 • The largest segment of visitors was in the 50 to 59 age bracket at 24%. The 40 to 49 age bracket was at 22%. 43% of the respondents were female. 
 • As far as income levels, the $80,000+ was the largest group with 21%, most in professional occupations.
