Thomas Jefferson Gets Facelift for 2005

For the first time in 67 years, a new likeness of Thomas Jefferson will appear on the nickel in conjunction with the Westward Journey Nickel Series™ which commemorates the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. There will also be two new designs on the nickel's reverse.
The 2005 nickels will feature a new, contemporary image of President Jefferson and an inscription of the word "Liberty" based on Jefferson's own handwriting (above, center).

The first of two new reverse designs will feature the American bison (above, left), recognizing the American Indians and wildlife encountered by the Lewis and Clark expedition.

In late 2005, the nickel's reverse will feature a scene of the Pacific Ocean and an inscription reflecting an excited entry in the journal of Captain William Clark on November 7, 1805 (above, right). The design visually depicts the expedition's exultation on believing they had finally reached the Pacific Ocean after so many months of arduous travel.

In 2004, the US Mint released the Peace Medal and Keelboat nickels, which featured new images on the coin's reverse.  Depictions of Monticello and Thomas Jefferson will return to the nickel in 2006.
