Owego Rotary Installs Kayak Landing

The Owego Rotary Club has completed the installation of a small boat landing at Mayor's Park in Owego. The docking site is on Front Street across from the Elk's Club in the heart of downtown Owego.

The project is one of several the club has undertaken to commemorate Rotary's 100th anniversary, according to Rotary president, Judy Kip. Other projects include: the installation of bike racks in the village, flower bed plantings at the entrances to the village, a riverbank clean up at Draper's Park (scheduled for September) and the painting of the iron fencing along the railroad underpass on North Street, a project just getting underway this week.

The boat landing was designed to provide access to the village for kayaks, canoes, and small boats.  "There's never been a good place to land in the village, at least in recent history," according to project chairman Merlin Lessler. "Now, paddlers on the river are welcomed into town at a convenient location where they can tie up their boats and come ashore without wading across a muddy riverbank."  "The boat landing should help business," according to Darcy York, owner of the Awakenings Coffeehouse. "It's just another way for customers to "discover" Owego and enjoy our unique shops and restaurants."
