 It's September 1979. Hurricane David heads toward Florida after battering the Caribbean. 

 The state funeral of Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was killed by an IRA bomb, is held in London.

 New York rescinds its odd-even gas rationing which was in effect in nine counties in the New York City area.

 Actress Jean Seberg, 40, dies in Paris.

 The 31st Annual Emmy Awards show is hosted by Cheryl Ladd and Henry Winkler. President Carter makes a surprise, live appearance from the White House to honor three TV journalists who were killed during assignments. The show Lou Grant wins for outstanding drama. Taxi is chosen as Best Comedy. Ron Leibman of Kaz wins for Best Actor in a Drama. Mariette Hartley wins for Best Actress in a Drama. Carroll O'Connor wins for Best Actor in a Comedy for his work on All in the Family. Ruth Gordon wins for Best Actress in a Comedy for her work on Taxi.

 Senator Ted Kennedy has not yet ruled out the possibility that he will  challenge President Carter for the Democratic nomination for President.

 Hurricane Frederic hits the Gulf Coast of Florida and Alabama. Winds exceed 100 miles per hour.

 ABC News reports that Elvis Presley died of drug abuse, not of natural causes.

 President Carter orders Secret Service protection for Senator Kennedy because of the attention Kennedy is receiving as a possible Presidential candidate in the 1980 election.

 In New York City, 200,000 people protest the use of nuclear power.

 Donald McHenry is sworn in as US Ambassador to the United Nations.

 Local developer Arthur "Bud" Stair decides to retire. Stair began building homes in Tioga Terrace in 1954.

 Broome County receives 1.87 inches of rain when what is left of Hurricane David reaches New York State. 

 The 2nd Annual Sun Run is held in Binghamton. The event features three races: a 5K, 10K, and 20K race. Chip Boehm of Chenango Forks wins the 20-kilometer race in 63 minutes seven seconds.

 At SUNY-Binghamton, classes start on Monday, September 10.

 IBM buys property near its Endicott facility to use for parking.

 McLean's Department Store, which has been in business for 96 years, will close its doors at the end of the month. McLean's was one of Binghamton's largest stores, and had branches in Endicott and Owego. In 1972, the McLeans sold their business to the Rothschild family of Ithaca.

 Shareholders of Magnetic Laboratories, Inc. approve an acquisition by Savin Corporation. 

 Movies playing in local theaters include Just You & Me, Kid starring George Burns and Brooke Shields; The Seductionof Joe Tynan starring Alan Alda; A Little Romance; Breaking Away; Hot Stuff; The Exorcist; The Kids are Alright; When a Stranger Calls; The Concorde Airport 79; The Legacy; and Young Frankenstein.

 Tuesday night TV shows include The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, Happy Days, The Lazarus Syndrome, Angie, Three's Company, Taxi, and California Fever.
