County Watch
by G. Penney

On July 13, following the public meeting of the county legislature, Mr. Johnson discretely drew me aside and took me to task for having stated that the county's newest parking lot might be used for parking refrigerator trucks. Perhaps I was stretching it a bit. But on many occasions I have seen a large over-the-road truck parked at night on the grounds behind the Human Resources building at 231 Main.

Actually, the additional space was added to allow room for heavy equipment during the construction of the court annex and presumably for the planned demolition of the former school building. It seems they just cannot wait to tear that building down!

As usual, you and I, the taxpayers, will be expected to pay the price for demolition, $400,000. In addition, a supposed expert, hired by the county, has estimated $500,000 for asbestos removal. This is to demolish a building that even the county manager has said is at present fundamentally sound. This site has already cost the taxpayers more than one million dollars for now abandoned plans. Will this foolishness never end?
