OA Board Opens Can of Worms?

The Owego Apalachin School Board in a 5 to 2 decision, (Civic and Gatto voted no) voted to give Superintendent Mychael Willon health benefits for his "live in companion." In the past, health benefits have been given only to "immediate family members." The board also voted to give Willon a raise of more than $8,000 in addition to the added benefits.

Most taxpayers have expressed that they are not happy with the board's decision. Dr. Willon, who is compensated by the school district by more that 5 times what the average taxpayer takes home, should certainly be able to afford to pay for his companion's insurance, rather than ask the taxpayers to do so. This comes just after the school board told the community that they cut out all extras in the budget to keep it lean.

Currenty, Willon is the only employee of the Owego-Apalachin School District that is receiving health benefits for a non-family member. How long will it be before another employee of the Owego-Apalachin School District asks for the same treatment? And what will the board do then?
