Kids' Corner
by Makenzi Waterman, Age: 10
Welcome to Kids' Corner! And this month, I would like to tell
you how to buy and take care of new pets. The animals I will be telling
you about are, dogs, cats, and hamsters. So, if you are planning to get
one of those pets, read this article. Enjoy!
Dogs
If you are buying a dog, you need to remember it is a very big
commitment. They need exercise, attention, grooming, and daily care. Also,
before getting a new dog, your family should sit down and discuss your
lifestyle. Dogs need full attention and if you are gone a lot, then maybe
a dog is not the best pet for you. If dogs are left alone for long periods
of time they can become destructive or anti-social. The best equipment
for your dog is: dog bed, collar, leash and bowls. If you are leaving your
dog outside for a long length of time you should purchase a dog house.
This way the dog can keep warm or get out of the bad weather, such as,
rain or snow. Dogs love to play, especially with their owners. Make sure
to have a lot of toys for them!
Cats
Taking on a cat is also a big responsibility. Most cats prefer
to groom themselves. A long-haired cat requires extra grooming from its
owners at least 2 or 3 times a week. This way, you can make sure that the
fur is not becoming knotted. The knots can be painful for the cat. Cats
are very independent, unlike dogs. They will still need attention from
their owners. Buy them lots of toys, and they can entertain themselves
for hours. If you pay too much attention to them (like you would to a dog),
they may bite or scratch you.
Hamsters
If you are buying a hamster from a pet shop, what should you
look for? If the pet shop is clean and tidy, that is a good pet store to
buy your hamster from. It's a nice idea to find out about hamsters before
getting one. You can ask an employee about them and that can give you a
good mind to see if they know about the hamsters they are selling. You
will need to buy a cage, wheel, bowls and toys for the hamster. They will
need attention from their owner at night, because, they are nocturnal.
Avoid wood shavings made from pine because it can cause irritation to their
eyes. They are great pets, but if you buy two, house them separately. If
you house them together, fighting may occur. They enjoy living by themselves.
I found this info on www.PetWebsite.com. If you are interested
in other animals, check out that Web site on your computer. There are a
lot of fun facts.
Remember to check out your local animal shelter. There are many
wonderful animals that need to be adopted. Thanks!
