Coburn Library Offers
Writing Workshops for Children

The Coburn Free Library, 275 Main Street in Owego, will sponsor two writing workshop series for elementary students in August. The first, Make Your Own Picture Book!, will be taught on August 4, 5, and 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm by Karen Bernardo, a library assistant and published writer. Aimed at children entering second or third grade, Bernardo's workshop will teach participants what makes a story work, and guide young writers in the production of their own picture book to take home. The free workshop will be
limited to the first ten second or third graders who sign up in person at the library.

The second workshop, Reading to Write, will be taught on August 11, 12, and 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm by Jude Carlini, also a library assistant and published writer as well as a teacher at Charles F. Johnson Elementary School in Endicott. Aimed at children entering Fourth or Fifth Grade, Carlini's workshop will engage children in a group writing project based on Margaret Wise Brown's book "The Important Book;" encourage children to write fractured fairy tales based on Jon Scieszka's "The Stinky Cheese Man;" and create memory boxes as an exploration of memory, based on Mem Fox's "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge." This free workshop will also be limited to the first ten Fourth or Fifth Graders who sign up in person at the library.
