25 Years Ago It's August 1979. President Carter confirms that he will run for re-election in 1980. He expects his opponent will be Ronald Reagan. New Yankee catcher Thurmon Munson, 32, is killed when the plane he is piloting crashes in Ohio. Willie Mays is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. In Iraq, 21 men are executed after having been convicted of plotting to overthrow Saddam Hussein. President Carter's mother, Miss Lillian, celebrates her 81st birthday. UN Ambassador Andrew Young resigns after a controversial meeting with a Palestinian official. Actress Vivian Vance, 70, dies in California. She was best known for her role of "Ethel Mertz" on I Love Lucy. In Italy, a woman gives birth to octuplets. Six of the eight babies die within three days of delivery, and chances of survival for the remaining two babies are slim. Fans of the late Elvis Presley mark the second anniversary of his death by burning candles outside Graceland. Soviet Bolshoi Ballet dancer Alexander Godunov, 29, is granted political asylum in the United States. Lord Louis Mountbatten, 79, an uncle of Prince Philip and "honorary" grandfather to Prince Charles, is killed when an IRA bomb explodes on his boat off the coast of Ireland. Mountbatten's grandson Nicholas Knatchbull, 15, and two other people are also killed in the attack. Sally Rand, 75, actress and exotic dancer dies. She was perhaps best known for popularizing the fan dance. Chicago performs at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Howland's re-opens at the Oakdale Mall after three months of remodeling. The BC Open begins in Endicott. HADCO Printed Circuits, Inc. agrees to buy Robintech in Owego. The takeover is scheduled to be completed by September 7. Robintech employs 117 people and has made printed circuit boards since the 1960s. Monday night TV shows include Little House on the Prairie, The White Shadow, Monday Night Baseball, M*A*S*H, WKRP in Cincinnati, Lou Grant, All Creatures Great and Small, and Masterpiece Theatre's Poldark. Movies playing at local theaters include The Amityville Horror ("For God's sake, get out") starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder, Hooper, Moonraker, Meatballs, The In-Laws, Star Wars, North Dallas Forty, Hot Stuff with Dom DeLuise and Suzanne Pleshette, The Seduction of Joe Tynan starring Alan Alda, and Breaking Away. Top tunes include My Sharona by The Knack, Good Times by Chic, Main Event/Fight by Barbra Streisand, After the Love Has Gone by Earth, Wind & Fire, and Bad Girls by Donna Summer. Popular Science magazine's "What's New in Electronics" section features a Toshiba Beta VCR with an extended five-hour playing time. The new dual-speed VCR (model V-5425) will sell for about $1400, and the blank tapes will sell for about $23. McDonald's lowers the prices of its regular hamburger and cheeseburger. A 1.6 ounce hamburger now costs 40¢ and a cheeseburger costs 45¢.
