County Watch
by G. L. Penney

Taxpayers have not heard the last of the county site at 231 Main Street in Owego. On June 21, I saw the superintendent of public works standing in front of that building, talking with two men whom I did not recognize. Since I was not invited to join the conversation, I can only presume that the county is conducting another site study, such studies having already cost us more than a million dollars for this one site alone.

While the normal procedure for releasing a county-owned property is public auction, our legislature seems to have some penchant for controlling future uses of our no longer needed properties. As far as I can determine, the county intends to demolish the building for a parking lot as a place for refrigerator trucks to park with engines running on cold winter nights.

Of course, I can only conjecture. As usual, the legislatures' intentions are a well-kept secret.
