Berkshire Community Spirit Survives Hundreds of residents of the Town of Berkshire are working to bring something back to the community that was lost for decades. The old Community Hall, the green wood frame structure behind the Berkshire Free Library, is being revived as a focal point and meeting place for the town. Its location on the "village green" – the space that includes the fire hall, pavilion, picnic grounds, and library – is ideal for its intended use once again as a community center. Originally built to complement the Berkshire School, it housed a cafeteria and gymnasium and at one time even a bowling alley. Plays, dances and movies were held through the mid-1950s. Residents of all parts of Tioga County are welcome to join in the effort to restore and renovate the old Community Hall. The next meeting takes place July 15 at 7:00 pm at the pavilion behind the Berkshire fire hall. All are welcome. To volunteer to help, or to share your memories of the building, call 607-657-2742.
