Karpel and Millar Win Awards 
for Outstanding Sportsmanship

 
Katie Karpel was awarded the Owego Free Academy Girls Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for 2004 at the OFA Winter Sports Banquet on March 17. Katie has participated in many academic and athletic endeavors while at OFA.  She was awarded the Citizenship Award in 2002, was a member of the Honor Society, recipient of an English Merit Award and a member of the Key Club. Katie was an outstanding softball player for four years at OFA. She was chosen an All Division shortstop in 2002 and All Conference Pitcher in 2003. She was also a member of the OFA Girls Basketball team for four years and was on the soccer team and swim team. Her competitive spirit was a strong asset to all the teams she played on. She loved the team spirit that sports at OFA fostered. Her teammates are her best friends in high school. Katie's favorite subject is English and she enjoyed debating in Participation in Government class.  Her future plans are to attend Oneonta State College and major in English before going to graduate school for Library Science.

 Katie plans to play softball at Oneonta and coach a team of her own some day.

 Michael J Millar was awarded the Owego Free Academy Boys Outstanding 
Sportsmanship Award for 2004 at the OFA Winter Sports Banquet on March 17. Michael has been involved with many service and academic organizations at OFA in addition to being an outstanding athlete. He has been in the Key Club for four years, SEAS Club for four years, Yorkers Club for three years, and a NYS Scholar Athlete in soccer, swimming and tennis. Michael is a member of the National Honor Society and in Who's Who in American High Schools.

 He held the offices of Vice President in Student Council and SEAS Club. He was a winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution High School Award. He was member of the Varsity Club for four years and was awarded varsity letters in soccer, swimming and tennis. The Owego soccer team won the 2003 New York State Championship for Class B, the tennis team was sectional champs in 2003, and the swim team was  sectional champs in both 2003 and 2004. Michael was a captain of the 2004 swim team. Michael has worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the elementary swim program. His favorite experiences in high school sports were the opportunity to make great friends and to have fun. 

 Michael plans to attend Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and is interested in history and political science.
