12th Annual Mathalon Winners The 12th Annual Tioga County Mathalon was held on Saturday, March 27, at the Spencer Middle School. Ninety-six students spent the morning in spirited competition. Sixteen teams of 5th and 6th Graders were challenged in problem solving. The winning teams are:
Grade 5 - Second Place - Apalachin Elmentary School - with students Marina Fargnoli, Eliza Majka, Tyler Roosa, Hayden Bell, Paul Shotwell, and Mike Ross. Teacher - Bradley Lewis. Principal - Joe DiCosimo. Grade 5 - Third Place - Elm Street Elementary School - with students Larisa Pachuta, David Talada, Taylor Durgin, Tim Rote, and Chelsea Bryan. Teacher - Shirley Tyrell. Principal - Anne Bernard. Grade 6 - First Place - Tioga Middle School - with students Dan Layman, Adam Stewart, Matthew Morris, Devin Luu, Paul Shuman, and Andrew Vale. Teacher - Kathy Cook. Principal - Cynthia Bennett. Grade 6 - Second Place - Elm Street Elementary School - with students Lydia Morris, Ian Connor, Leo Ayres, David Fagan, Christina Dunkerley, and Terri Gore. Teacher - Teresa Secor. Principal - Anne Bernard. Grade 6 - Third Place - Lincoln Elementary School - with students Erika Kisel, Danielle LaRue, Beitris McKeon, Savannah Brandon, Megan Sutryk, and Kelly Jilson. Teacher - Mike Croft. Principal - John McGuire. In addition to receiving ribbon awards, the first, second, and third place teams at each grade level received gift certificates to Barnes & Nobles Booksellers. All participants also received tote bags containing calculators, pencils, and pads. The mathalon was conducted by The Tioga County Coalition for Better Schools, Lockheed Martin Systems Integration - Owego, and IBM-Endicott. The event was staffed and supported by volunteers from Lockheed Martin, who donated their time to help make the day a success by working as registrars, proctors, checkers, and recorders. Funding for the mathalon and for the awards was provided by The Tioga County Coalition for Better Schools, Lockheed Martin-Owego, and IBM-Endicott. The Tioga County Coalition for Better Schools is an educational partnership with the school districts in Tioga County, which was formed to enhance math and science education in local schools.
