AES Team Wins Regional Odyssey
of the Mind Competition

The Odyssey of the Mind team from the Apalachin Elementary School
came in first place at their regional competition which was held last month
at Binghamton High School.
The team chose to compete in the "Envirover" long term problem. They
had to build and drive a human-powered vehicle that would collect trash
and deliver it to a factory. There the trash had to be recycled into something
useful. The Envirover had to make at least three deliveries to the factory.
The team had to present a prototype of the recycled item. During the presentation,
they had to produce five samples of the product using the trash that was
delivered by the vehicle. This needed to be connected by a student-written
skit having a store setting and requiring a humorous sales pitch. All of
this had to be done within eight minutes.
Everything in this competition is student generated. There could be
no outside assistance from coaches, parents, or school personnel. For example,
when producing their version of the vehicle, lessons on how to use s drill
or glue gun could be given, but then they had to apply these lessons to
their own ideas.
The members of the Apalachin Elementary School Odyssey of the
Mind team are:
4th Graders: Tyler Hohman, Laura Fallon
5th Graders: Paige Vymislicky, Rachel Berryman, Aleah Williams,
Brian Ives.
The coaches of the team are John Fallon and Rich Ives.
