Annie's Corner
Ever heard the expression if walls could talk? Well this is my tribute to some walls that could and did, but are silenced now. Candor High School, currently in the middle of a large, much needed building project, had a special room. Once upon a time the small room had an old couch, chair, and stereo equipment and housed the Academic Honor Society. Any student who was 10th grade or higher, maintaining 85 or above for their GPA and also involved in extra curricular activities gets chosen to be part of this society, and then can go to the room when they have a spare period. It was an escape, a hang out for many; a chance to be themselves away from teachers and administration. A new larger room was given to this year's members and the old room was cinder blocked up, but inside are black walls. Black walls that were covered with years of sayings and colorful artwork done by past students and left for the next group to maybe read and learn from, or add to. Signatures of past alumni, either done in paint or chalk, a vivid contrast to the black walls could be found there. Some students even used pens to dig messages into the wooden doorframe, immortalizing themselves for all time, or so they thought. Words of wisdom being passed on to other classes, beliefs, thoughts, feelings, moments of creativity all lost as the room was closed. A virtual time capsule that won't be around for future generations to view. Change is nice, change is good and needed, but still shed a tear for those memories lost when the room was closed. I remember back to a place in my high school, a goal I tried to do, but never could. I tried so hard to climb the gym rope to the top but never quite made it. Once at the top, a pen could be found to sign your name and a few words. The prize for achieving the goal, and I knew exactly what I wanted left up there. A friend rewarded by efforts by climbing up and placing my words and name for me and the year I graduated. I felt so proud, and immortalized, but now I wonder is my name still there or has "change" erased me as well. Change is necessary but I sure hope some pictures were taken, or can be found in past yearbooks so that others can remember the honored room.
