 New York Harvest School Recipe Contest Winners

Owego Elementary School fourth graders (L-R) Shawn Marshall, Jacob Mendelson, Joshua Raftis, Shelby Monell, Landon Thomas, Nicole Smith, Chris Matt and Jeremy Barth participated in the "New York Harvest School Recipe Contest" sponsored by the Broome/Tioga Farm-to-School Project. Owego Elementary School fourth-grade students from Mrs. Jackson's and Mrs. Betoni's homerooms submitted a variety of delicious recipes to the "New York Harvest School Recipe Contest" sponsored by the Broome/Tioga Farm-to-School Project in celebration of "New York Harvest for New York Kids Week," September 27-October 5.

 The recipes were judged on the number of New York grown fruits and vegetables included as well as nutrition and flavor by Cynthia Cave, Kathy Vanderpool and Ellen DeFay from the Tioga and  Broome County Cornell Cooperative Extension nutrition programs.

 Jeremy Barth took grand prize for his Harvest Soup, a hearty vegetable, barley and beef soup that included five New York vegetables, high-quality nutrition and plenty of flavor. His winner will be served to the entire elementary school during a lunch in the cafeteria. 

 Shawn Marshall was runner up with his Zucchini and Squash Soup.
 Joshua Raftis was a winner with his Colorful Garden Salad. Landon Thomas was a winner with his Fruit Salad. Jacob Mendelson took the award for most creative recipe with his Apple-Graham creation. And Chris Matt got high honorable mention for his Peanut Butter-Apple Cookies.

 Certificates of participation were awarded to Nicole Smith, Madison Pierce, Jimmy Cron, Claire Dellinger, Tyler Pickett, Irene Bradley, Kelsie Gooding, Shelby Monell, Anthony Tucker, Mathena Kwiatkowski and Spencer Davis for their excellent recipes.

 The Broome/Tioga Farm-to-School Project is dedicated to getting more locally grown foods used for meal preparation in the area's school cafeterias, and schools throughout the state served New York grown and processed food products from September 27 to October 5 in celebration of "New York Harvest for New York Kids Week."
