Low Income Housing in Owego
Construction has begun on a Low Income Housing Project
on Dean Street in Owego. The new facility, called "Owego Community Gardens,"
is a 22 unit project. Construction should be completed by February
2004. This project was made possible by funding form the USDA Rural Development
Corporation and the New York State Housing Trust Fund, who will also subsidize
rent payments.
What will the presence of more low income housing mean to you?
Will it bring more people into the are who will end up on our social services
rolls and welfare? Will this cause the Tioga County Legislators to increase
your property taxes even more in order to pay for the state-mandated --
yet not state funded -- programs that will come from the low income housing
project? Time will tell.
