 It's July 1978. Actor James Daly, 59, best known for his role on the TV show "Medical Center," dies.  

 Martina Navratilova defeats Chris Evert to win the  Wimbledon title. Bjorn Borg wins his third consecutive Wimbledon title.

 Lee Iacocca is fired as president of Ford Motor Company.

 Pete Rose breaks the National League record for consecutive base hits. 

 Peggy Dean swims the English Channel in record time - 7 hours, 40 minutes.

 Billy Martin resigns as manager of the New York Yankees and is replaced by Bob Lemon the next day. Five days later, On Old Timer's Day, the Yankees announce that Billy Martin will return as Yankee manager in 1980 and Bob Lemon will become general manager. 

 Miss South Africa, Margaret Gardiner, 18, is crowned Miss Universe 1978 in Acapulco, Mexico. The Runner-Up is Miss USA, Judi Anderson of Honolulu.

 The world's first test-tube baby - a healthy five-pound, 12-ounce girl - is born in Oldham, England, to Lesley and John Brown.

 Queen Elizabeth II visits Canada on a 12-day tour accompanied by her her husband, Prince Philip, and sons Prince Andrew, 18, and Prince Edward, 14.

 Violinist Elmar Oliveira, 28, of the Town of Chenango, wins the prestigious first prize-Gold Medal in the 6th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He is the first American to win this award.

 The Riviera and Strand Theaters in Binghamton are sold to two churches who plan to use the buildings as a center for religious worship.

 Glen Campbell performs at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. Tickets cost $8.50, $7.50, and $6.50.

 Vestal's indoor skateboard park closes after being open only a few months. The park is located inside the old Vestal Theater building which has just been sold.

 For the first time, New York Telephone's 1978-79 phone books will include seating charts for the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena and the Forum. 
The 620-page book includes 109,000 listings.

 SUNY-Binghamton tears down the walkway connecting the University Union and Dickinson College because it's cheaper to demolish the "Esplanade" than to maintain it.

 The 199th Tioga County Fair is held July 25 through July 30 at Marvin Park in Owego. Daily admission is $2.00 for adults, $1.00 for ages 12 - 17, and free for those under 12.

 The Broome County Fair opens at the Whitney Point Fairgrounds. Admission is $2.50.

 Wednesday night TV shows include "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams," "Eight is Enough," "Nova," "Black Sheep Squadron," "Charlie's Angels," "Police Woman," and "Starsky and Hutch."

 Movies playing in local theaters include The Swarm; Foul Play with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase; Damien, Omen III; Saturday Night Fever; The Jungle Book; Jaws 2; Grease; Cat From Outer Space; Winnie the Pooh & Tigger Too!; Star Wars; American Graffiti, The Bad News Bears Go to Japan; Heaven Can Wait; Hooper; Revenge of the Pink Panther; and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. 

 And a half gallon of Dairy-Lee ice-cream costs $1.29, and a 16-ounce can of Hershey's syrup costs 49¢.
