It's June 1978. In Texas, George W. Bush wins the Republican congressional nomination. In Virginia, John Warner, husband of actress Elizabeth Taylor, is defeated in his bid for the GOP Senate nomination. In California, voters approve the "tax revolt" Proposition 13. David Berkowitz, 25, is sentenced to 25 years to life for the "Son of Sam" murders. 20/20 premieres on TV. Hugh Downs is named host of the show a week later. The comic strip Garfield by Jim Davis begins syndication in 41 papers. First Lady Rosalynn Carter receives the Ladies Home Journal's Woman of the Year award. Affirmed wins the Belmont Stakes and takes the Triple Crown. Jordan's King Hussein marries Lisa Halaby, 26, of New York City. She becomes Queen Noor. Andy North, 28, wins the US Open Golf Championship in Denver
Actor Bob Crane, 49, best known for his role on Hogan's Heroes, is murdered in Arizona where he was appearing in a play. The Binghamton Metropolitan Transit Study Group identifies the Johnson City Traffic Circle as the county's number one traffic problem. State transportation officials call the circle outdated, confusing, and dangerous. Paul Anka performs at the Veteran's Memorial Arena. Voters approve the Owego-Apalachin School District budget of $8,583,035. Tioga Park, the quarter horse race track in Nichols, opens for another season. The Town of Union approves the building of a $3 million high-rise apartment building for senior citizens on Hooper Road across from Farm-to-Market Road. The third Admiral Wilson Yegatta Regatta is held on the Chenango River in Binghamton. The event raises $5,000 for charity. Lt. Governor Mary Anne Krupsak announces that she will not seek re-election. Governor Hugh Carey chooses Mario Cuomo as his running mate. IBM transfers more than 500 Endicott and Glendale employees to Charlotte, North Carolina, in a plan to consolidate the System Communications Division. However, IBM officials pledge that they are committed to the Triple Cities area, and Endicott plant manager Martin McCann says, "We are here to stay." Top tunes include Too Much, Too Little, Too Late by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams; You're the One That I Want by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John; Shadow Dancing by Andy Gibb; With a Little Luck by Wings; Baker Street by Gene Rafferty; and Feels so Good by Chuck Mangione. Tuesday night TV shows include "The Man from Atlantis," "Happy Days," "The Big Event," "Three's Company," and "Carter Country." Movies playing in local theaters include Jaws 2 (Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!), Capricorn One, American Graffiti, Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, F-I-S-T starring Sylvester Stallone, Blue Country, The Cheap Detective, Convoy, and Heaven Can Wait. And a one-pound package of Land O'Lakes Margarine costs 49¢,
and a three-ounce container of Breyers Yogurt costs 34¢.
