Scleroderma Walk-A-Thon at Otsiningo Park on June 1

On Sunday morning, June 1, many caring New York and Tri-State area residents will gather at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton to help kick off the First National Scleroderma Awareness Walk-A-Thon. This is a nationwide event with more than 25 walks being held throughout the country to help raise funds for a disease that afflicts more than 300,000 sufferers in this country alone.

The cause of scleroderma is unknown and there is no known cure. The course of the disease is unpredictable. It is characterized by swelling of the hands and feet, skin tightness and joint stiffness, crushing fatigue, and extreme sensitivity to cold. As the skin hardens, the disease may begin to affect internal organs such as the kidneys, lungs, and heart. Its symptoms can range from mild to life threatening.

The Binghamton Scleroderma Support Group is hosting the walk.

For more information about the walk-a-thon, please contact the Tri-State Chapter office at (800) 867-0885 or Rosemary Markoff, President at (607) 723-5906.
