VVA Catfish Derby - June 7 & 8 The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 480, in Owego, will hold their 8th Annual Catch and Release Catfish Derby on Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8. Derby Headquarters and Weigh-in Station will be at Pavilion 2 at Hickories Park in Owego. Fishing starts at 7:00 am on Saturday, June 7, and finishes at 12 Noon on Sunday, June 8. Weigh-in times are from 3:00 to 9:00 pm on Saturday, and from 7:00 am to 12 Noon on Sunday. The Grand Prize (for the heaviest catfish) is a Tracker 16-foot Boat Package that includes a 9.9 hp Mercury electric start outboard, fish finder, trolling motor, built-in cooler, and rod storage, live well, two swivel seats, and a drive on trailer. Total package retails for more than $6,400. The prize for the second heaviest catfish is a 15-foot canoe. More than $9,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded. All fish must be alive, in good condition, and suitable for successful release. There are separate prizes for the youth division (ages 12 and younger). The top three prizes pay $75, $50, and $25. Registration is $20 per person, children under 12 can participate without charge. Participants can also help the VVA support the Open Door Mission by bringing a can of food to place in the donation barrel. On Sunday, June 8, there will be a Kids' Cast Off Contest, face painting, and a Chicken BBQ. The Owego Police Department will also be offering fingerprinting for all children. WHWK (FM 98.1) will also be there on Sunday, June 8, to cover the day's events in a live broadcast. For entry forms, or for more information, call (607) 687-1579 or (607) 625-5780.
