A blizzard hits the New England, bringing record snowfall, 100 mph winds, and flood tides. Providence, Rhode Island receives 26 inches of show, Boston gets 22 inches. New York City receives the most snow in 31 years. In New Orleans, near freezing temperatures dampen Mardi Gras celebrations. The Chinese New Year of the horse, 4676, begins. Food products contain saccharin must now carry a label warning that it may cause cancer. The House votes to kill the B-1 Bomber program. At the 20th Annual Grammy Awards, Kenny Rogers (Lucille) and Crystal Gale (Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue) are chosen Best Country Vocal Performers, Debby Boone is chosen Best New Artist of the Year, and Hotel California by the Eagles is chosen Best Record. James Taylor and Barbra Streisand are selected as Best Pop Vocal Performers of the Year. Eric Heiden wins the world speed skating title. Linda Fratianne and Charles Tickner win the US Figure Skating Championships. Bobby Allison wins the Daytona 500. Cale Yarborough and Benny Parsons finish 2nd and 3rd. Leon Spinks, 24, defeats Muhammad Ali, 36, to become the world heaveyweight boxing champion. Reggie Jackson introduces the Reggie bar, a candy bar of chocolaty covered caramel and peanuts. In Africa, Mary D. Leakey discovers 3.5 million-year-old footprints that appear to be those of a human ancestor. In Johnson City, the Grand Union at 200 Main Street closes. The Cider Mill Playhouse opens its winter season with Born Yesterday. All seats are $4. The Tri-Cities Opera performs Verdi's La Traviata at the Forum. Nick's Garage opens on Main Street in Apalachin. Gene Roddenberry appears at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena to talk about Star Trek.
