FEMA Awards Wellness & Fitness Grant to Apalachin Fire Department (AFD)
One of the contingencies of grant approval by FEMA is that AFD provide 10% of the grant which totals $51,080. Therefore, the community is being asked for donations to help defray AFD's 10%. Donations are tax deductible. Please write checks to Apalachin Fire Department and indicate on the memo line "FEMA".  Those making contributions will receive expedient acknowledgment of their donations. No amount is too small and would be most appreciated!  Included in the grant are funds for AFD physical fitness equipment,  firefighter's consultation with a fitness trainer/nutritionist, smoking cessation program, a respirator fit tester, immunizations for firefighters, and a one day community opportunity for a
consultation with a fitness trainer/nutritionist as part of our "Fit for Life" Day which will be held in October. Questions regarding the grant can be referred to 625-2790.
AFD's Outgoing Officers
Roy Runyon retired as First Assistant Chief of AFD at the end of 2002.  He served as an Assistant Chief for 10 years, and his fellow firefighters extend a hearty "Thank You" for the many years of service to AFD and the Apalachin community. Roy will remain on as an active firefighter and continue to be a valued member of the department.

2002 Officers who have moved out of the area: Ed Prentice, Lieutenant of 101, moved to the Baltimore, Maryland, area in September; Matt Harrington, Lieutenant of 131, moved to Boise, Idaho, in October. Being an officer requires an extra commitment and we are grateful for the many hours they invested on behalf of AFD.

New Members
December brought us 5 new members:  Tom Bidwell, Jesse Garrett, Lisa Siebert, Steve Starner, Jr. and Ryan Telfer. Jesse, Steve, and Ryan join us as Apprentices (those between the ages of 16 and 17),  while Lisa, Paramedic, and Tom, EMT-Basic, join our volunteer Fire/EMS Service as seasoned EMS providers. They both are presently contracted with us during the day through the Village of Owego and volunteer with us evenings and weekends. We welcome all our new members!
