 It's January 1978. An Air India Boeing 747 explodes and crashes into the Arabian Sea shortly after taking off from Bombay, India, killing all 213 people on board.

 The minimum wage is raised to $2.65 an hour.

 Vice President Walter "Fritz" Monday celebrates his 50th birthday.

 Close to 10,000 fans visit Graceland to commemorate Elvis' birthday. He would have been 43.

 Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, 66, dies in Minnesota. Humphrey served 23 years in the Senate, was Vice President under Lyndon Johnson, as was the Democratic candidate for President in 1968. (He lost to Nixon).

 Senator Humphrey's body is flown to Washington and lies in state in the Capitol. At a memorial service in Washington, which is attended by former Presidents Ford and Nixon, President Jimmy Carter calls Humphrey "the most beloved of all Americans." 

 The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Denver Broncos 27 - 10 in Super Bowl XII in New Orleans.

 In Connecticut, the roof of the Hartford Civic Center Coliseum collapses under the weight of snow.

 The northeast is hit by a third major snowstorm in less than a week. New York City receives more than a foot of snow and has drifts up to six feet. Syracuse gets 9 inches of snow in 6 hours. The Southern Tier gets about 8 inches of snow, and now has 18 inches of snow on the ground.

 Muriel Humphrey, widow of Sen. Hubert Humphrey is appointed by the Governor of Minnesota to fill her husband's seat in the Senate until a special election is held in November.

 There is a confirmed outbreak of Russian Flu in Wyoming.

 In Waverly, vandals cause $25,000 worth of damage to the Junior Senior High School by starting two fires, breaking windows, dumping cabinets, destroying display cases, and overturning desks.

 On Old Vestal Road, a gas-related explosion destroys a two-story building which houses a pizza parlor and an unoccupied apartment. The blast is heard as far away as Endwell. 

 The Tioga County Council on the Arts opens an office at The Spot on Main Street in Owego.

 Movies playing in local theaters include The Choirboys; The Goodbye Girl; Oh, God!, The Gauntlet; Saturday Night Fever; and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

 Tuesday night TV shows include The Fitzpatricks, Happy Days, Three's Company, One Day at a Time, FamilyLaverne and Shirley, and Lou Grant.

 Top tunes include Baby Come Back by Players; How Deep is Your Love by Bee Gees; Here You Come Again by Dolly Parton, You're in My Heart by Rod Stewart, and Back in Love Again by LTD.

 And a 5-pound box of Gravy Train dog food costs $1.39, an 18-ounce box of Purina Meow Mix costs 55 cents, and a 6.5 ounce can of Friskies cat food costs 20 cents.
